Wait, It Gets Worse

Prompt: Pluck

Dear Wednesday,

The word “pluck” is one of those English words that has at least two completely different definitions– how on earth do new English speakers ever learn the language?

Pluck can mean “find and pull out”, as in “pluck (the feathers from) a chicken” or “pluck (the stray hairs from) one’s eyebrows.

It can mean a method of playing a stringed instrument, using the fingers instead of a bow.

It can mean a little spark of courage and energy, or spunk, as in Lou Grant telling Mary Tyler Moore: “You’ve got spunk! …I hate spunk.”

And like so many, many words, the more you write or say it, the more alien it seems.

Tenuously related to “pluck” is the first of several of my favourite cartoons:

Have a great Wednesday and a summery week, full of music, plucking, and cats!

Free-Range

Prompt: Trace

There is a trace of rain still pooling on the bricks of the patio. It is very hot. There are weeds and thistles in the garden, which I am trying to tell myself are part of an important ecosystem.

Now that we have the daily word prompt, “trace”, out of the way, may I present a few of my favourite cartoons?

Most reliable cheese. I wonder what that would be? A sturdy English cheddar? A nice mild Gouda? An inoffensive goat cheese…?

Peace and cheese,

Stags Leaping

Prompt: Crossing

Ah, Wednesday. You are here again!

Today, Wednesday should be about winter, which has made itself known today by way of a frigid and powerful north wind, which is blowing the powdery layers of snow into the air, where the sunlight catches them, and it is all quite enchanting, as I think about it in front of the fireplace.

I’m also thinking about cartoons, the first of which features none other than a mother duck (also Moses):

And for those of us who sometimes drive in the mountains (and for those who don’t):

My favourite and final, captionless cartoon on this wintery Wednesday:

Have a safe crossing into Thursday!
