For some reason– perhaps the recent US election cycle?– many statistics have been dragged out and used to condemn or exalt, and we non-statisticians tend to nod and think we have learned something. But what is missing? A healthy skepticism and the understanding that correlation is not always causation.

Here are a few shocking graphs, using actual, publicly available numbers, for those of us who are desperate to discover a new conspiracy, or maybe for the statistic skeptics out there:
