Prompts for the Promptless

Prompt: Longing

kim kardashian

I am longing, as others are (judging by the decrease in the number of submissions to Prompt of the Day) for prompts that involve more than one word, because I can pick out a dictionary word, or ask my partner what he dreamed about and get a word. I have “Word of the Day” delivered to my email inbox daily– which I highly recommend– all wonderfully inspirational and often unusual words, which I so far have chosen not to write about.

But a writing community is a community. I am relatively new to the Daily Post Prompt of the Day, and I occasionally see slightly irritated posts relating to the repetition of the prompts. There is a link on the site called Submit a Prompt which I suspect we could think about using, instead of puzzling over this new one-word phenomenon.

There is nothing wrong with one-word prompts; it’s just that the Prompt of the Day, during my brief participation, has not been one-word. People like me can be inflexible and disrupted when things change. In an effort not to be that wuss, I will continue to give it a go.

In the meantime, for anyone going through prompt withdrawal, here are a few prompts to get you through the rough patch:

  1. You are the black sheep of the Kardashian family. Describe a day in your life.
  2. You have a new invention for Dragon’s Den (or Shark Tank), a TV program where entrepreneurs pitch their sometimes odd business ideas and hope to get investments. What is your idea and how do you pitch it?
  3. It’s a divisive world these days. What happens when two people of radically opposing views get stranded on that desert island? A liberal and a conservative. A fundamentalist and an atheist. You and your racist uncle. Be fearless.
  4. What kind of person would you be if you were the opposite gender?
  5. You have just become the supreme ruler of a huge and varied civilization, which no one can see but you. Are you crazy?

Have fun!
