I always think of Kevin when I peel a banana. Isn’t it strange how one fleeting moment in your life comes back to you every time an innocuous trigger is activated?

We were away, many years ago, on a corporate weekend, spouses included, and were slowly making our way along the breakfast buffet, and there was the giant basket of bananas. Kevin unceremoniously rooted around in it for quite some time, which caught my attention. You see, Kevin doesn’t like ripe bananas. He told me that they mustn’t be green, but they must be a very pale greenish at the ends and very firm. He found his perfect banana and proceeded to the steaming tub of scrambled eggs.

Such a nothing moment, but I think of Kevin every single time I reach for a banana. Kevin lives thousands of miles away now, and we are only occasionally in touch. Would Kevin eat this banana? I ask myself, every time. How is Kevin? I ask myself.

Susan told me the little fortune cookie joke. I must have been the last person on earth to hear it. We were dining with Kevin and Susan and some other corporates at the Qin Dynasty in Houston. After the meal, we broke open the fortune cookies. “If you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it,” Susan read from her slip of paper. “…In bed,” she added. That was the joke. You add the phrase “in bed” after each fortune. I thought it was pretty funny. Here are some more:

  • A good way to keep healthy is to eat more Chinese food …in bed.
  • You learn from your mistakes… You will learn a lot today …in bed.
  • A dream you have will come true …in bed.
  • The greatest risk is not taking one …in bed.
  • A stranger, is a friend you have not spoken to yet …in bed.
  • Its amazing how much good you can do if you don’t care who gets the credit …in bed.

Susan, may you rest in peace.
